Your brand’s logo is one of the very first things people will notice about you.

So, of course, you want that thing to look great.

But more than just looking good, it needs to feel…right. And by right, we mean it needs to reflect who your brand is and what you stand for and it needs to make an impression so potential customers will remember you.

Now, that’s a lot to ask from one little image. Which means your logo has to deliver.

And if you don’t have the budget for a full design team or the time to go back and forth with freelancers, then creating that special logo that checks all the boxes and feels right can start to feel a bit impossible.

But, no worries, marketer. That’s where AI can be your best friend.

With today’s advanced AI-powered design tools, creating a fast, on-brand logo (that actually looks good) is more accessible and easier than ever. These tools can generate multiple options in just seconds, making them a great option for marketers, startups, and small business owners who need to get their logo done and move quickly!

But …

Before You Open Up Your AI Tool of Choice, Read This

A great logo isn’t just about picking the right AI tool.

You’ve still got to have some strategy behind it. You need some insight, a vision in mind, and a good understanding of your brand’s voice and style.

And today’s blog is here to help you with just that.

If you’re looking to create or redesign your brand logo and you don’t have a creative team to help you do it, then we’re here to show you how to use AI as a tool — not a shortcut — for creating a logo that’s uniquely yours!

Here’s how to get started:

5 Steps to Creating a Logo with AI

Step 1: Get Clear on Your Brand

Elements of a search engine. Getting clear on your brand is the 1st step in creating a logo with AI.

Before you start using AI to generate logo design, make sure you know what your brand actually stands for and the kind of impression you want it to make.

If you’re an established company, that might mean revisiting your brand guidelines and your value prop and mission statement before starting a redesign. If you’re rebranding, it could mean taking that information and redefining your direction. And if you’re starting something entirely new, then, friend, now is the time to lay that foundation.

Ask yourself a few questions:

  • What are 3 words that describe your brand’s personality?
  • Who is your audience and what do they care about?
  • What colors, styles, or symbols feel right for your brand and your audience?
  • What kind of first impression do you want your logo to make?

Whether you’re tweaking an existing logo or building a new one from scratch, getting clear on your brand identity will make the next four steps so much easier!

Step 2: Choose the Right AI Tool

There are tons and tons of AI logo tools out there.

Some are harder to use than others. Some are free, others aren’t. Some offer tools to let you customize output and others don’t.

Each tool does something a little different than the next, and it will be up to you to decide what you’re looking for.

Here is a list of some of our favorites you can consider:

  • Looka — A fast and easy option that starts at $20 for a basic logo, or $96/year for a full brand kit. Great for creating a full set of brand assets without much effort.
  • Brandmark — Minimalist and modern logos with clean lines. Starts at $25 for basic use, $175 for commercial packages. Best for startups that want sleek and simple.
  • Canva (with AI features) — Free to use, or $119.99/year for Pro. Perfect for beginners and teams who want creative flexibility with drag-and-drop tools and AI suggestions.
  • Tailor Brands — Offers branding and logo generation with plans starting at $39.99/year. Ideal for small business owners who want quick results across multiple brand touchpoints.
  • Hatchful by Shopify — 100% free and extremely user-friendly. A good option for basic logo needs or quick mockups, but limited in terms of customization.
  • Midjourney or Adobe Firefly — Subscription-based (Midjourney: ~$10–$30/month; Firefly included in Adobe plans). Great for creating artistic, abstract, or out-of-the-box logo concepts using text prompts.

Step 3: Better Prompts for Better Results

Two hands typing into a tablet. Using the right prompts is the 3rd step in designing a logo with AI.

Once you’ve got the right tool for the job, the next step is to start actually using it.

Just remember, whenever you’re using a generative AI tool, especially one like Midjourney, Firefly, or any other prompt-based logo generator, your results are only as good as the prompts you give it.

The AI is super advanced but it doesn’t know your brand, your audience, or your vibe. Only you do, and unless you tell it exactly what you’re looking for, you’re not going to get usable output.

That’s why you need to learn to write a clear, detailed prompt. The more specific your prompt, the closer you’ll get to something you can actually use (or at least use as a starting point to build on). A vague request like “kickass logo for my business” is going to get you something pretty generic.

On the other hand, a detailed and thoughtful prompt will give the AI more direction and give you output that helps you stand out from the thousands of other businesses using the same tools.

Here are some prompt-writing tips to get you started:

  • Include your industry and style — Try something like: “modern logo for a fintech startup targeting Gen Z” or “minimalist line art logo for a sustainable skincare brand.”
  • Mention color palette, layout, and tone — Let the AI know if you want an icon, a wordmark, or both. Include colors, mood, and key adjectives (e.g., bold, luxurious, playful, calming).
  • Play with variations — Try adjusting a single word in your prompt and see how the outputs shift. It helps you refine your direction without starting over.
  • Use visual references when available — Some tools let you upload inspiration images or select from style presets. Take advantage of that—AI learns best with examples.

AI won’t magically generate the perfect logo on the first try, but it will give you much better results when you give it a good prompt to work with.

Step 4: Review and Refine Your Options

Okay.

You’ve got your tools, you’ve fed it thoughtful and detailed prompts, and it’s generated plenty of options to worth with.

The next step is to take a step back and evaluate them like a designer would evaluate their own work. And while it might be tempting to just pick the one that “looks the coolest,” don’t do that! Look for something with long-term usability, something that works for your brand.

Here are some things to look for:

  • Is it legible and clear at small sizes (think business cards or favicons)?
  • Would it still be recognizable as a watermark, embroidery, or black-and-white print?
  • Does it feel distinct, or could it belong to any brand in your space? You don’t want something that could be confused with another brand.
  • Are the colors and fonts consistent with your overall brand color palette?
  • Can it adapt well for print, digital, and social media?
  • Could this logo scale with your business? Will it still feel relevant as your brand grows?

Once you’ve got a few strong contenders, you can start refining!

Some AI tools let you make edits directly, or you can just use a platform like Canva to adjust things like spacing, colors, layout, or spelling (AI image generators are notoriously bad spellers). A few small tweaks here and there can make all the difference between a logo that’s “eh, pretty good,” and a logo that’s, “the one.”

Step 5: Know When to Bring in a Pro

A designer sitting at his workstation. Knowing when to bring in a pro is the 5th step in designing a logo with AI.

Most of the time, an AI logo maker can get you pretty close to a final result that feels like a part of your brand.

But if you’re just launching your business, working in a competitive space, or just want to make sure that your logo stands out for the right reasons and is the best version of itself as it could be, it’s worth handing things over to a pro.

Consider hiring a graphic designer if:

  • You need multiple logo versions (light, dark, icon-only, stacked)
  • You want to trademark your logo and need it to be 100% original
  • You’re building a full brand identity, not just a single image
  • You want someone to refine or expand on your AI-generated concept, and you don’t have the design skills to do it the way you’re envisioning.

And if any of those scenarios start to hit close to home …
