On February 15, 2024, OpenAI stunned the world by previewing its newest development in AI technology: Sora AI.

This groundbreaking innovation marks a very significant leap forward in AI technology, introducing a way for OpenAI users to create original video with only a simple text prompt.

So, what does this advancement mean for marketers?

For the marketing world, a tool like Sora has the possibility of opening up unprecedented opportunities for creativity, personalization, and content creation.

If you’re ready to learn all about this upcoming AI model, then today’s blog has what you need. We're taking you through everything you need to know about OpenAI's Sora, its expected capabilities, and what it could mean for the marketing industry!

What is Sora AI?

Two giant question marks in purple speech captions. What is Sora AI?

Sora is a groundbreaking text-to-video model and the latest innovation from research lab, OpenAI.

It aims to revolutionize the video creation process by creating videos from scratch in mere seconds, making video production simpler and more accessible than ever before.

Like ChatGPT and DALL-E before it, Sora is designed to take a user’s written instructions and transform their text prompts into vivid and realistic video scenes that bring their vision to life.

Sora’s Capabilities

Sora is the result of years of research and is a huge advancement in AI text-to-video capabilities. Its abilities are stunning, and users should be impressed by what it can actually do.

Here are some notable capabilities to expect:

1. Text-to-Video Generation

As we described earlier, Sora will be designed to take a user’s written prompt, such as “historical footage of California during the Gold Rush,” and instantly create a realistic video up to a minute long to match it.

Whether you want your video to be realistic, animated like a Pixar movie, or Claymation, all you need to do is type your request in Sora's prompt field and watch it work.

2. Extending Existing Videos

In addition to generating completely original footage, Sora will also enable its users to extend their existing videos.

Tack on extra time to the beginning or end of your video and easily enhance your storytelling, smooth out rough transitions, or add dramatic conclusions that wrap up your content in a more satisfying way.

Whatever you need, Sora can generate content to seamlessly blend with your original footage.

3. Generating Videos from Stills

Bridging the gap between static images and dynamic video, one of Sora’s most fascinating reported abilities is to generate video from a static image.

Upload an existing photo or image, instruct Sora on what you would like it to do with your image, and enjoy your brand-new footage.

Why Marketers Should Keep Their Eye on Sora

A rocket ship blasting off. Sora AI is full of possibilities.

It’s no surprise that filmmakers and visual arts professionals are thrilled about Sora and what text-to-video could mean for their industry, but marketers should be very interested too!

An advanced text-to-video generator like Sora can be used in a variety of very innovative ways to enhance marketing strategies.

Sora AI for Content Creation

Having a way to instantly create video is a huge advantage for content creators.

Sora AI, with its advanced text-to-video generation capabilities, opens up a world of possibilities and makes content creation faster and much more accessible for everyone on the team.

Here are a few ways Sora can streamline your content creation strategies:

  • Customized Video Content Creation — Marketers can use Sora AI to generate tailored video content that aligns with their brand messaging and campaign goals. This could be anything from unique product demos to personalized video messages for different audience segments, while also reducing the time and cost associated with traditional video production.
  • Interactive and Immersive Experiences — Sora AI can help marketers create immersive and interactive video content for virtual events, webinars, or online experiences. This could include virtual tours, product launches, or interactive narratives that allow viewers to explore different aspects of a product or service in a unique and more compelling way.
  • Content for Emerging Platforms — As new platforms and technologies emerge, marketers need to adapt and create content that fits these new mediums. Sora AI can be used to develop content for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) experiences, helping brands stay ahead of the curve.
  • Educational and How-to Videos — Sora AI can help produce educational content and tutorials related to a brand's products or services. These videos can help inform customers, answer common questions, and provide value, thereby supporting the customer journey and reinforcing brand expertise.

Sora AI for Content Marketing

The ability to generate videos from nothing but text also opens up a world of possibilities for brands’ content marketing strategies as well. Sora AI could make it possible to tailor your video content directly to your marketing objectives to keep each campaign fresh and resonating with your target audience.

Here are more ways Sora AI could revolutionize your content marketing efforts:

  • Dynamic Advertising Campaigns — With Sora AI, marketers can quickly produce a variety of video ads to test different narratives, visuals, and calls to action. This flexibility allows for A/B testing at scale, enabling the optimization of ad campaigns for better engagement and conversion rates.
  • Enhanced Social Media Presence — Social media platforms are increasingly favoring video content. Marketers can use Sora AI to create engaging, high-quality video posts and stories that capture attention, drive interaction, and increase followers, without the need for extensive video production resources.
  • Storytelling and Brand Narratives — Marketers can harness Sora AI to tell compelling brand stories, creating video content that resonates emotionally with their audience. This storytelling approach can enhance brand loyalty and create a deeper connection with consumers.
  • Market Research and Consumer Insights — Beyond content creation, insights gained from interactions with AI-generated content can inform market research and consumer behavior analysis. Marketers can experiment with different content types to see what resonates most with their audience, providing valuable data for future campaigns.

Sora AI for Video Marketing

There is a reason video marketing is so effective.

Video is dynamic, it’s engaging.

It’s also extremely popular.

According to these video marketing stats for 2024, a whopping 75% of mobile users spend their time consuming short-form video content on social media platforms like TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

That’s a very compelling reason for 88% of marketers to recognize video as a huge part of their content marketing strategies. It’s also why 52% of brands use video to educate their audience over other methods and why suddenly having video content made so much more accessible is a very exciting thing for your brand.

In case you aren’t convinced, here are some more reasons why video can help you stand out in the market:

  • High Engagement — Videos are more fun and engaging than static images or text, easily capturing a viewer's attention and keeping it throughout the viewing experience.
  • Consumer Preference — The preference for video content is pretty clear, with a significant portion of the audience choosing video for entertainment and education, making it an essential medium for brands to engage with their target market effectively.
  • Enhanced SEO — Video content significantly boosts your website's search engine ranking. Search engines favor websites with video content, leading to higher visibility and more organic traffic for your brand.
  • Improved Conversion Rates — Incorporating video on landing pages and in email marketing campaigns has been shown to increase conversion rates. Videos can convey value propositions and call-to-actions much more effectively than text alone.
  • Stronger Emotional Connections — Video and audio have the unique ability to elicit emotions, making them a very powerful tool for storytelling. Brands can build stronger connections with their audience by sharing stories that resonate on a more personal level.
  • Great Shareability — Videos are more likely to be shared across social media platforms compared to text and static images. This virality factor amplifies your brand’s reach and can lead to increased brand awareness and customer acquisition.
  • In-depth Product Showcases — Video allows for detailed demonstrations of product features and benefits, providing a better understanding than photos or descriptions alone. This can greatly influence purchasing decisions by giving customers a closer look at what they're buying.
  • Versatility Across Channels — Video content can be repurposed across multiple marketing channels, from social media to websites to digital ads, offering a consistent message and brand experience across touchpoints.

OpenAI’s Response to Ethical Concerns

A balance scale weighing an X and a Checkmark sign, for the pros and cons of a tool like Sora.

Obviously, the ability to generate realistic video from text or images is a technology that is going to have to be monitored very carefully for ethical and safety reasons.

Like other OpenAI models, Sora is expected to reject any prompts that violate their usage policies, such as prompts requesting:

  • Hateful imagery
  • Sexually explicit content
  • Extreme Violence
  • Celebrity likenesses

In addition to those safeguards, as of this writing, Sora is being carefully tested by a group of “red teamers” — experts in areas like hateful content, bias, and misinformation — who are working diligently to assess critical areas of harm or risk. OpenAI is also working on creating tools to be able to detect videos generated by Sora in order to get in front of any potential ways that Sora can be used to misinform or mislead people online.

But while there are concerns, there is also definite excitement about Sora’s upcoming release and it’s important to also highlight the creative and amazing ways things that this AI tool will make possible.

Along with the “red teamers,” Sora is also being tested by a few visual artists, designers, and filmmakers who are using the model and providing OpenAI with feedback on how to make it as useful as possible.

When Will Sora Be Released?

As of this writing, (March 5th, 2024) there is no word yet on when OpenAI plans to release their newest model to the world.

Though its capabilities were previewed last month, OpenAI maintains that Sora won’t be ready any time soon.

The best we can do at this time is to give an estimated guess: So, going by OpenAI’s previous announcements and launches of their other popular models, ChatGPT and DALL-E, we might see Sora made available to the public in late 2024 or early 2025.

Until then, you can find some amazing previews of its capabilities here on Sora’s website.
